(1765-1839), was a member of the New York Senate from 1791 to 1795, and Lieutenant-Governor from 1795 to 1801. He served in the New York Assembly from 1808 to 1810. He was appointed commander of the forces on the northern frontier in 1812, and fought the battle of Queenstown Heights. He was a canal commissioner from 1816 to 1839. He represented New York in the U.S. Congress as a supporter of Adams from 1822 to 1829. He founded the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Troy.
